Good day!
I think I actually had a good teaching day today overall.  My first class only has eight students (I had them all last semester), but since we came back from break they have been attending sporadically, not doing homework, not doing research, and not participating in any kind of discussion.  I feel like it’s an uphill battle to convince them they even have a reason to be there. My afternoon...

I used a complex-compound kind of sentence in an E-Mail and now they’re all confused about which part modified the other and what’s due when.  Fuckin A.

Randomly Compiled Thoughts
My apartment smells like roasted asparagus.  Tastes good-smells bad.  Gross, even.  I found seven magnetic alphabet letters and two pretend mousies under the fridge—Nessy’s favorite toys.  She often sits back up on her hind legs and plays with the letters on the fridge.  She’s like a little human.  It’s too cute.  I desperately need to do the dishes.  I’ve been eating...

Why grading takes me so long:
mllehazelwood: Read a page. Shake my damn head. Sit in disbelief that someone thought this was good. Check the internet to clear up my head. Finish reading paper. Craft a long letter to the student (average of 400 words) where I try to find something to praise and yet ultimately tell them why this is not good. Shake my head. They won’t even take the time to read my letter. Start again. ...

Study Finds More Young Kids Can Work a Smartphone...
world-shaker: mobiletechlearning: A new study also found that 2-to-5-year-olds are also more likely to be able to open a Web browser than swim on their own. Mobilized thinks it is time to make cellphones waterproof so these kids can text for help if they ever fall out of a boat. Via allthingsd.com This line is going into my next presentation. This scares the shit out of me.

Rescue Me gets more and more fucked up all the time.  Sheila is a crazy, crazy bitch.  Batshit crazy.  Unbelievably crazy.  I mean… Holy shit.

My students essentially ignored all of my feedback on their drafts.  They did not follow instructions—not the oral instructions from class nor the instructions on the written prompt they all have.  They took no initiative to even attempt to make works cited pages that resemble MLA format in any way, shape, or form despite how we went through it in class.  I stressed that the primary...

– Santorum: Obama ‘A Snob’ For Wanting Everyone To Go To College | TPM Livewire GWALP opines:  While I do believe the 4-year-arts college experience is NOT for everyone, I’m sick of this mindset that college is for the “snobs” or the “elite” or something.   You can go to “college” in a trade skill...

Does anybody else hate Janene on Rescue Me?!  What a bitch!  She drives me crazy.  “Oh.  Hey.  Our kid just died and I’m going to start banging your brother and still demand everything from you including custody of our remaining children, money, and all our old furniture/belongings.”  WTF?

Well… today was looking promising until I stopped at 5 to shower and run errands and three hours later I’ve got way too big of a dinner in the oven and Rescue Me on the Netflix.  Grading will commence soon, I promise.

I am actually doing work today.  I haven’t made a lot of progress, but I did do thesis reading.  Soon I will shower and spend the evening grading.  I made a plan for thesis-writing and it involves a few 10-12 page days, but it allows me time to read/incubate between writing sessions and I think it’s actually do-able if I stay on task!  Like today!

I found out this morning that I was accepted to Florida State and University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  Even though there’s virtually no way either program can beat Louisville in terms of combined funding (i.e. yay for fellowships) and quality of the program, I’m obviously still thrilled to be accepted to more schools!  It also simultaneously makes me feel like I can crank out a thesis in...
